FBI Recommends Secret Family Code Words to Combat Online Scammers

April 8, 2025/0 Comments/in Defense/by spowell

In response to the growing threat of online scams and identity fraud, the FBI is now advising families to establish secret code words to help verify identities and prevent falling victim to digital impersonation schemes. This recommendation comes as scammers increasingly use artificial intelligence and social engineering tactics to clone voices, create fake social media accounts, and deceive unsuspecting family members into sending money or sensitive information.

The Rise of AI-Driven Scams

Scammers have become more sophisticated, using AI-generated voice cloning and deepfake technology to impersonate loved ones convincingly. By harvesting publicly available information from social media, fraudsters can create fake accounts that look and sound authentic. These fake profiles are then used to send distress messages, claiming emergencies like arrests, kidnappings, or financial crises, all in an attempt to manipulate victims into sending money or personal details.

How Secret Family Code Words Work

A secret family code word serves as an additional layer of authentication. When a family member receives a suspicious message or call, they can ask the sender to provide the agreed-upon code word. If the person cannot produce it, it’s a strong indicator that the communication may be fraudulent.

To effectively implement this strategy, families should:

  • Choose a unique code word that is not easily guessed or associated with public information.
  • Keep the code word confidential and only share it with trusted family members.
  • Regularly update the code word to maintain security.
  • Use it across different communication channels, including text, calls, and social media.

Other Strategies to Protect Against Scammers

While a secret code word is a powerful tool, the FBI also recommends additional measures to safeguard against online scams:

  • Enable privacy settings on social media to limit public access to personal information.
  • Verify unexpected requests by directly calling or video chatting with the supposed sender.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive details like birthdays, addresses, and frequent locations online.
  • Educate family members, especially children and elderly relatives, about digital fraud tactics.

Conclusion

As scammers continue to refine their techniques, staying one step ahead is crucial. The FBI’s recommendation to use secret family code words provides a simple yet effective way to authenticate communication and prevent falling victim to fraud. By combining this method with other cybersecurity best practices, families can protect themselves from digital impersonation and financial exploitation in an increasingly deceptive online world.
